Today, Canadians Who Qualify for the GST Credit Are Anticipated to Receive a “Grocery Rebate”

The Canadian government created a grocery rebate, as part of Budget 2023, to help eligible Canadians financially. On July 5, 2023, this rebate will be given out along with the subsequent quarterly GST/HST credit payment.

The Grocery Rebate will be equal to twice the amount of your January 2023 GST/HST credit.

Who can get the payment

If you were eligible for the GST/HST credit for January 2023, you will receive the grocery rebate.

Even if you have no income to report for 2021, you must file a tax return in order to be eligible for the grocery rebate.

You can be eligible for the July GST/HST credit but not the grocery rebate, or vice versa. While the subsequent quarterly GST/HST credit payment in July 2023 is computed using your 2022 tax return, the grocery rebate is based on your 2021 tax return. For more details, please refer to your Notice of (Re)determination.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for this refund, you and your spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) must complete the requirements for the 2021 base year.

Payment details

Beginning in January 2023, the grocery rebate will be double the amount of your GST/HST credit payment.  Based on your family's circumstances in January 2023 and your 2021 adjusted family net income, the amount is determined.

Your compensation might be as much as:

If you are single

$234 (no children)
$387 (with 1 child)
$467 (with 2 children)
$548 (with 3 children)
$628 (with 4 children)

If you are married or have a common-law partner

$306 (no children)
$387 (with 1 child)
$467 (with 2 children)
$548 (with 3 children)
$628 (with 4 children)

You would still be eligible for the Grocery Rebate even if you got your GST/HST credit payment in one single sum in July 2022.
