Treats for Peace: Young Changemakers Supporting Children Affected by War

We are proud to highlight two inspiring young leaders who are turning their 11th birthday into a powerful opportunity for impact.

Maya and Sonya Kara, students at SLI The Sidney Ledson School, are the brains behind Treats for Peace, a special fundraiser aimed at supporting children affected by war. The initiative, set for October 29, has a simple yet profound goal: to raise funds for UNICEF, a leading global organization dedicated to helping children in conflict zones.

Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders

Maya and Sonya’s decision to launch this fundraiser demonstrates not only their compassion but also their ability to lead by example. By organizing Treats for Peace, they are giving their peers, family, and community a tangible way to contribute to a global cause. Their thoughtful approach to fundraising shows the power of young minds when given the space to think creatively and act decisively.

How Treats for Peace Works

On their birthday, the sisters will host a treat sale at their school, inviting students and parents to donate and participate in this delicious fundraiser. For a $20 donation, participants receive a treat voucher, allowing them to enjoy four sweet treats and a bonus slice of birthday cake. For students eager to contribute in other ways, there’s the option to bring Halloween-themed treats to sell, earning them house points while supporting a worthy cause. All proceeds will be donated directly to UNICEF.

Maya and Sonya’s initiative resonates with the mission of highlighting stories where passion meets purpose. By raising awareness and funds for children in need, they are helping to build a brighter future for those most vulnerable.

Why This Matters

At a time when we are overwhelmed by headlines of conflict, initiatives like Treats for Peace offer a glimpse of hope. By encouraging children to take action, Maya and Sonya are planting the seeds of empathy and leadership in their community—something that will resonate far beyond the fundraiser itself.

This act of kindness shows that each of us, no matter how young, can make a difference. Their story embodies the belief that every contribution—no matter how small—can create ripples of positive change.
